The Bandito Band

The Bandito Band was formed in early 1977 and served as Jerry Jeff Walker's backing band from 1977-1982.

When Jerry Jeff's first Austin, TX-based backing group, The Lost Gonzo Band, went out on their own to seek fame and fortune, a new band was needed. Jerry Jeff was finishing up an album titled A Man Must Carry On. There were still a couple of songs to be recorded before the record was complete so Jerry Jeff and his management company contacted musicians Jerry Jeff had seen playing with other artists he'd shared billings with on shows around the country. Those contacted and invited to the recording sessions were guitarist Dave Perkins from Nashville, TN (Vassar Clements, Papa John Creach), guitarist Bobby Rambo from Dallas, TX (Five Americans, BW Stevenson), pedal steel guitar player Leo LeBlanc (RIP) from Memphis,TN (John Prine), bass guitarist Ron Cobb from Boulder, CO (Michael Martin Murphy, Doug Kershaw) and drummer Freddie Steady Krc from Austin, TX (BW Stevenson).

After the sessions were completed, all mutually agreed there was something special about this combination of musicians. Jerry Jeff offered them a job with him and all musicians accepted. It was decided a keyboard player was necessary and Dave Perkins suggested his old friend Reese Wynans from Sarasota, FL. Reese had played with an early lineup of what became the Allman Brothers, Boz Scaggs and post-Jerry Jeff with Delbert McClinton, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble. He currently performs with Joe Bonamassa. Former Lost Gonzo Band saxophonist Tomas Ramirez came back on board and The Bandito Band was complete.

The Bandito Band played on the following records with Jerry jeff: "A Man Must Carry On" by MCA Records, "Contrary To Ordinary" by MCA Records, "Jerry Jeff" by Electra Records, "Too Old To Change" by Elektra Records, "Reunion" by Elektra Records and "Cowjazz" by Southcoast/MCA Records. By the late 70s/early 80s drummer Freddie “Steady” Krc left the group but returned to play percussion on "Cowjazz". He was replaced on drums by Michael Clarke (Byrds, Flying Burrito Bros., Firefall). Steel guitarist Leo LeBlanc left and was replaced by Mike Hardwick.

Meet the Band!

Reese Wynans (keyboards):

Reese Wynans, in the world of blues, is a genuine master. He is perhaps best known from his former gig as a member of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble. Reese was in that iconic band from 1985 until Vaughan’s tragic death in 1990, bringing his rich keyboard textures to the Soul to Soul and In Step records.

After taking on a number of other musically diverse projects in a variety of genres, Reese Wynans became a member of Joe Bonamassa’s blues band in 2015. Wynans had already played with Bonamassa before, appearing on the studio album Different Shades of Blue and the live album Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks.

Ron Cobb (bass guitar):

Bass guitarist Ron Cobb is from Boulder, CO, and has played with Michael Martin Murphy and Doug Kershaw. Ron Cobb grew up in Detroit and began studying music at age seven.  After high school, he wrote commercials and played and produced recording sessions for Detroit artists.  He performed with local bands, Motown musicians, Reprise Record’s Spike Drivers and played on Dick Clark’s Cavalcade of Stars tour.  Leaving Detroit, he played and recorded with several bands in the Bay Area, Doug Kershaw, Michael Martin Murphey, Jerry Jeff Walker, Carol King, and Hammerhead Lincoln.

Ron has turned down two gold records, is unaware of any Grammy nomination, and has done more Jerry Jeff radio interviews than Jerry Jeff.

Ron’s musical influences include Detroit Motown/Funk/Jazz as well as Detroit C&W music from folks coming to work in the auto factories.  There was also good R&R and psychedelic rock.  Mr. Ron Cobb reports that  “ I was into all of it!

Working with Jerry Jeff Walker was his favorite because of how tight the band members and road crew were, and that Jerry Jeff let you play however you wanted.

Ron tells us that he wrote songs but the only ones that got airplay were commercials for beer, body lotion, and a pizza place.  One song with an early band got airplay in Detroit.

A special remembrance from his time working with Jerry Jeff Walker was the US Festival in 1982 in San Bernadino, California.  There were 400,000 people in attendance and that helped make for an incredible experience, performing their music for people who loved it!

Ron now does whatever he wants or whatever his wife tells him to do. He plays and records with some rehearsal bands as long as they don’t do gigs.  He does perform live at church and currently spend hours studying piano so that he can play like Reese.

Mike Hardwick (steel guitar):

When original steel guitarist Leo LeBlanc left The Bandito Band, he was replaced by Mike Hardwick.

Dave Perkins (guitar):

“When I was 13, I put down $35 at a pawnshop on Philadelphia’s South Street and took home a Harmony arch-top guitar (painted sparkle gold).  When I bought the guitar it was not with aspirations of becoming a great player.  It was more about self-expression and trying to write songs.  A decade and several guitars later, however, I developed enough skill that folks began to see me as a “guitarist.”  Since then, I have enjoyed the privilege of recording and/or performing with a number of America’s great popular music makers.

Freddie Steady Krc (drums):

Texas Music Awards Hall-of-Famer Freddie Steady Krc comes by his name honestly. This singer / songwriter / guitarist / drummer / renaissance Texan has plied his musical wares around the world the past few decades. A charismatic live performer, Krc wins over any audience with his captivating original songs and engaging stage presence. He also enjoys capturing the spirit of his favorite cover songs. Krc (rhymes with search) landed in Austin at the moment that a musical revolution was getting started at a styles-don’t-matter joint called the Armadillo. The kid and the town were a perfect match.

Tomas Ramirez (saxophone):

Austin's "Jazzmanian Devil", was born Tomás Almendarez Ramirez in Falfurrias, Texas in 1948. Ramirez began playing clarinet in his early childhood years and encouraged by his Uncle Wally, he began playing in bars at age 13 wearing a fake mustache. He learned his tenor saxophone chops from his uncle Wally and after Tomás graduated from high school, he studied under Dick Goodwin at the University of Texas at Austin where he toured with the UT Jazz Ensemble throughout Mexico in 1971. Two years later, he joined the Lost Gonzo Band backing Jerry Jeff Walker and began to widen his range of performance and reputation with such groups as Beto y los Fairlanes, Tommy Hancock’s Supernatural Family Band, Christopher Cross, and the Texana Dames.
