10-14-2018 – It’s a Plaid Plaid Plaid Plaid World: The Art of Davy Jones
SouthPop is kicking off our 15th exhibition season in truly weird Austin fashion by celebrating the life, music, and artwork of Cowpunk Icon Davy Jones. Like many of us, Jones wasn’t from Texas, but got here as soon as he could when he joined the army. After his time in Killeen was up, he traded in his camo for, you guessed it, plaid. Before long he was a fixture of the burgeoning punk scene in Texas and a mainstay at Raul’s nightclub. He played with all the great Texas punks, The Next, Big Foot Chester, and Hank Street Ramblers, but his home was with The Hickoids. Mashing together good ole Texas country with the irreverence and dissonance of the growing punk movement, Jones and the Hickoids created a uniquely Austin musical movement.
What many don’t know is that Davy was a prolific artist. Growing up he learned to play guitar on borrowed instruments, as his parents would only give him money for art supplies — NOT music. His gaudy sense of style, his crass sense of humor, and his punk DIY sensibilities came together in his visual works as well. Lots of posters, handbills, cartoons, comics and doodles will be on display, giving an insight into his character that supplement his musical legacy.
Please join us at SouthPop on Sunday, October 14th at 6pm where The Hickoids will perform to honor their fallen friend and co-founder. Beer, wine, and light refreshments featuring a corn theme will be on hand. We are asking a donation of $5 at the door while SouthPop members are admitted for free. There will be NO PARKING AT SOUTHPOP/PLANET K, so please park on Collier Street; handicap parking is only for drop off.
The It’s and Plaid, Plaid, Plaid, Plaid World Exhibition will run during SouthPop’s regular hours, 1-6pm Thursday – Sunday until December 7th. Admission to the gallery during our regular hours is always free. Included in this exhibition will be a special sale section where you can purchase one of Davy’s works to keep for yourself.
