3/11/2018 Austin Aqua Fest
From a small debutante ball sponsored by The Austin Admiral’s Club to a major Cultural Festival hosting the likes of Ringo Starr and Dolly Parton until it all came crashing down, Austin Aqua Fest celebrated a side of Austin most people don’t think of.
With humble beginnings as an effort by the Austin Admirals Club to bring awareness to local watershed and boost business in the summer months, it seems odd that Aqua Fest became one of the foremost displays of Austin’s weirdness. Traditional boat races gave way to drag boat races, the debutantes morphed into (at the time) scantily clad beauty queens, and the music embodied everything that made Austin cool… and eventually tanked the whole festival.
Please join us at SouthPop as we revisit this grand piece of Americana that turned Austin into a festival town by showing how to do it right — and how to do it wrong.
The opening celebration will be held March 11 from 2-6pm before you head out to your SXSW showcases. We will have refreshments, beer and wine, and live music by Ty Grimes and his band. Admission is a suggested, and very much appreciated, $5 donation or free for SouthPop members. Remember there will be NO PARKING at SouthPop, so please park on Collier Street.
The exhibition will continue through April 28 during our regular hours – Thursday – Saturday, 1-6pm. Admission to the gallery during regular hours is free. Be sure to bring by all your friends from out of town, or come take a break from the craziness downtown.
